Adidas has committed to making a dent in plastic pollution by teaming up with Parley for the Oceans to create products out of recycled plastic. They’ve sold over one million of their new sustainable running shoes last year. Now, they’re launching a new yoga collection with various onesies, crop tops, and leggings.
The new lineup is through a collaboration with Wanderlust, an organization that hosts various festivals and events throughout the year to help people live a better life. Some of their missions include promoting yoga to maintain peace, eating well for a healthier life, and being more sustainable to eliminate our environmental impact.
Once again, Adidas will be using Parley Ocean Plastic to create the apparel. The upcycled plastic was used to create more sustainable running shoes with the UltraBoost lineup last year. 11 plastic bottles were used in the laces, heel linings, and sock liner covers for each pair of these shoes.
All of the yoga products will have muted black, blue, and cream colors to achieve the desired calmness. Prices come in at about $35 for tank tops, $55 for tights, $80 for bomber jackets, and up to $120 for the “Onesie Legend Ink.” Unlike other athletic wear, this won’t contain synthetic materials and they are fully recyclable.
Both Adidas and Wanderlust have been partners in other apparel collaborations in the past, but this is the first time they’ve used upcycled plastic. Last summer, they launched the FW17 collection that had 25 different options. The new sustainable line was made available on March 1st in stores and online.
"We know our community of women are extremely passionate about environmental care," Alison Stewart, Adidas Women’s senior director, said in a press release. "Now, in our product they can make a difference to their practice and the planet at the same time."
Last September, Adidas and Wanderlust promoted their partnership by setting a Guinness World Record for “most people doing yoga in pairs” at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. 2,547 people participated in the event in a 10-minute event that used three different poses. Perhaps we’ll see a new record for most people wearing sustainable yoga wear at a future Wanderlust event.
